18th Erlangen International Comic Salon – 31 May to 3 June 2018

The 18th Erlangen International Comic Salon, the largest and most significant festival focusing on graphic literature and comic art in the German speaking realm, will take place from 31 May to 3 June 2018.
The biennale, which is organized by the Cultural Office of the City of Erlangen, has played a decisive role in changing the perception of comics in Germany – not only as a mass medium but also as an art form. The Comic Salon, which has reflected all the facets of the vivid genre for over 30 years, presents a unique programme that merges art and commerce as well as mainstream and avant-garde. About 25,000 visitors are expected during the four festival days in Germany’s comic capital.

The 18th edition of the festival will be a particularly special and exciting one. Since the congress centre is not available as a venue in 2018 due to restauration works, the comic fair will be hosted in temporary marquees in Erlangen’s city centre. More than 150 exhibitors – German and international publishers, agencies, comic dealers as well as comic and illustration classes from universities – present their programmes right in the heart of town. Numerous new releases are introduced to the public for the first time and more than 500 artists from around the world can be experienced live, presenting and signing their books.

The many high-quality exhibitions, presenting over 1000 original artworks, turn Erlangen into a unique temporary comic museum. This year the main exhibitions will be at the Kunstpalais, the Kunstmuseum, the Stadtmuseum and the Redoutensaal. Key aspects and important topics of the International Comic Salon and current issues concerning the comic market in general will be highlighted throughout numerous presentations, talks and panel discussions with illustrators, authors and publishers. Comic readings, drawing competitions, workshops and a diverse line-up of animated films, comic adaptations and documentaries enrich the festival's support programme. A popular treasure trove is the large comic exchange held at the cultural centre E-Werk on Saturday, 2 June. Family Sunday (3 June 2018) offers numerous attractions and activities for children, teenagers and families at reduced admission fees.

The prestigious “Max und Moritz“ Award is the most significant distinction for graphic literature in the German-speaking world. Presented in various categories by an independent jury of professionals, it recognizes the work of outstanding artists, acknowledges exemplary publishing and encourages the debate on graphic literature in general. As in previous years, the “Max und Moritz“ Gala in Erlangen’s baroque theatre (Friday, 1 June 2018) will be presented by Hella von Sinnen and Christian Gasser.

Concession applies for children and young adults from the ages of 6 up to 14 years, for handicapped people (with over 50% disability) as well as their companion (identity document with B-remark) and holders of the Erlangen Pass.

For other events (“Max und Moritz“ Gala, readings etc.) as well as the film programme (Comic Film Fest) special prices apply.

Advance booking of festival passes and one day tickets starts on 16 March 2018 at www.comic-salon.de/en and www.reservix.de, at established booking offices within the larger area of Erlangen / Nuremberg / Fürth and the ReserviX-booking offices all around Germany. From 31 May until 3 June 2018 tickets may also be purchased at box offices on the Erlangen Schlossplatz and other venues.
